Shoplots in Muar

Muar,oh,Muar! How I miss you so badly when I'm in Kuala Lumpur. Muar is like a peaceful little town. Free from the hustle and bustle of city life. Here, there's not much traffic jam as well. But, it's not too boring either. Muar, is the perfect blend of both countryside and also urban lifestyle. . Muar's shoplots are also preserved just the way they are since a long, long time ago till now. Giving this little town it's very own unique structures of building like in the 70's. Other than that, the food here is really nice too. Muar is famous for otak-otaks and also Wan Tan Mee.

Otak-Otak

 .
When I was a kid I used to think that otak-otak looks like of tongue.Slightly red and short like tongue..I'm so sorry. xD I do not mean to make you think wrongly. Anyway, "otak-otak" is a malay word  means brain in English. No worries, it's not made of brains. Otak-otaks are usually made from fish and prawns (seafood). Personally,I prefer fish otak-otak. I have to warn you though. Otak-otak are highly addictive. Don't blame me if you got addicted and cant stop eating it =D

Mamak! Roti! Maggi!

A mamak stall is a shop that sells "mamak" food. Although traditionally operated from roadside stalls, some modern mamak stall operators have expanded their businesses into restaurant or cafe-type establishments. Mamak stalls tend to be popular among Malaysian youths as hang out spots, due to cheap food and beverages being served 24 hours a day!

The most famous food in the "mamak" store is our traditional ROTI CANAI! :D

Roti canai, (roti means bread) is a type of Indian-influenced flatbread found in MalaysiaThe dish is composed of dough containing copious amounts of fateggflour and water. The form of fat used is usually ghee (clarified butter). The ideal roti is flat, fluffy on the inside but crispy and flaky on the outside.

Roti canai served with DAHL, FISH CURRY and SAMBAL :)

Roti canai is circular and flat. There are two ways to make roti canai that is either to twirl it until the dough becomes a very thin sheet and then folded into a circular shape or to spread out the dough as thinly as possible before being folded. Then the folded dough is grilled with oil. The first method is more popular and faster than the second. The term 'roti paratha' in Malay means 'plate bread'.

You can find Roti Canai at any "mamak" stall in Malaysia! All you have to say is "Bang, satu roti canai bang!" (Bro, 1 "roti canai" bro.) ;)

You can also order other roti's at the mamak! Such as :

Roti Telur (telur means egg)

Roti Bawang (bawang means onion)

Roti Tisu (A kind of tall and crispy "roti" that contains condensed milk and lots of sugar)

Another signature dish in the mamak is their "MAGGI GORENG" (fried maggi/noodle)

Maggi Goreng, fried with onions, eggs, vegetables and served with a lime! :)

Last but not least, the most famous drink in the Mamak stall.....

TEH TARIK!!! (direct translation : PULL TEA, funny isn't it? But really, its milk tea. :) )

So if you ever drop by Malaysia, you MUST MUST MUST go to the Mamak and try all these wonderful dishes!

Sin Wi :D
