The most famous food in the "mamak" store is our traditional ROTI CANAI! :D
Roti canai, (roti means bread) is a type of Indian-influenced flatbread found in Malaysia. The dish is composed of dough containing copious amounts of fat, egg, flour and water. The form of fat used is usually ghee (clarified butter). The ideal roti is flat, fluffy on the inside but crispy and flaky on the outside.
Roti canai served with DAHL, FISH CURRY and SAMBAL :)
Roti canai is circular and flat. There are two ways to make roti canai that is either to twirl it until the dough becomes a very thin sheet and then folded into a circular shape or to spread out the dough as thinly as possible before being folded. Then the folded dough is grilled with oil. The first method is more popular and faster than the second. The term 'roti paratha' in Malay means 'plate bread'.
You can find Roti Canai at any "mamak" stall in Malaysia! All you have to say is "Bang, satu roti canai bang!" (Bro, 1 "roti canai" bro.) ;)
You can also order other roti's at the mamak! Such as :
Roti Telur (telur means egg)
Roti Bawang (bawang means onion)
Roti Tisu (A kind of tall and crispy "roti" that contains condensed milk and lots of sugar)
Another signature dish in the mamak is their "MAGGI GORENG" (fried maggi/noodle)
Maggi Goreng, fried with onions, eggs, vegetables and served with a lime! :)
Last but not least, the most famous drink in the Mamak stall.....
TEH TARIK!!! (direct translation : PULL TEA, funny isn't it? But really, its milk tea. :) )
So if you ever drop by Malaysia, you MUST MUST MUST go to the Mamak and try all these wonderful dishes!
Sin Wi :D
